Many people don’t understand so many things when we’re dealing with God. The Muslims, for example, or also the Buddhists, Hindus, even nominal Christians think that the Christians have three gods: God, Jesus and Mary. That’s far from the truth. There’s only one God who created heaven and earth, his name is: Yahweh or Jehovah. That has nothing whatsoever to do with the Jehovah’s Witnesses; they are only abusing His name.
There is only one God, but human beings have created many different gods, because they don’t want this one God. According to the Bible, God is One, but in three persons. In order to understand that, we go to the first book of Moses, called Genesis, verses 1-2. Genesis has to do with birth. The Bible begins with the “birth” of the universe and ends with the destruction and the “new” birth of heaven and earth.
So it says in Genesis 1:1-2: In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
What do we have here? One God but in three persons. The Holy Spirit hovered over the waters, God the Father, who gave the command, and the Word! How did God create the universe? With His Word. Who is this Word? Let’s go to the Gospel of John Chapter 1:1-14: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. … The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
So who is the Word? Jesus Christ, God, who became man two thousand years ago, to show us the Father’s glory. Who created the universe? God the Father, God the Son (Jesus) and God the Holy Spirit, a God in three persons. The Holy Spirit and Jesus Christ come out of the Father. One of God’s many names in Hebrew is Elohim. The word Elohim isn‘t in the singular but in the plural form. Why? Because God is triune.
Exodus 1:26 says: “Then God said, ‘Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea...” Why does God say “Let us”? To whom is he speaking? To Jesus and the Holy Spirit! One God, three persons. If it’s still hard for you to understand this, then look at the sun. Symbolically we can say that the sun represents the Father, the light is Jesus the son, the warmth and power of the light is the Holy Spirit. Or take water: you can have the water in liquid form or as steam or ice, but it’s always the same water.
